Hans Hemmert

“Everyone loves a parade,” could just as easily be reworded, “everyone loves a balloon.”  Even Warhol would agree.  German artist, Hans Hemmert, fashions balloons into strange art.  Whether it’s building a to scale replica of a tank or cramming 3 story balloons into stairwells, he’s definitely into latex.  I really enjoy his series of portraits of people in yellow balloon suits.  Completely dehumanized, the inflated objects rob the individual of all identity, form or general appearance.  Instead they appear alien, quarantined in a soft yellow shell, but sickly happy, like a bruised banana.  I think the images are playful but also dark, as if giving a physical presence to depression; seeming happy on the outside but on the inside completely out of touch with the rest of the physical world.
