Erik De Nijs and Tim Smit

Whether reading quietly to yourself or out loud to your kids, creating the proper literary atmosphere is crucial to enjoying a good book.  Cue Dutch design duo Erik De Nijs and Tim Smit, the founders of Nieuwe Heren, or “New Gents”.  Recently Graduated from Utrecht, the two friends have been churning out some interesting design concepts for the last two years.  Their latest, “The Poets,” is a folding chair and reading lamp in one.  The Poets is in regard to the names of the two color specific chairs.  The Green one is William Blake, a right handed poet, while the white one is J. W. Goethe, a left handed poet.  The chairs don’t look terribly comfy, in fact the length of the seat seams very narrow, but the overall concept and design is very pleasing.  When not in use the chair/lamp easily folds and leans against the wall thanks to the flat side of the integrated lamp shade.  I’d love to have one of these leaning against the wall in my apartment.
